Thousand Oaks is the site of numerous corporate and regional headquarters, as well as other diverse retail, industrial and business entities. |
Major corporations include Amgen, Inc., and the Bioscience Division of Baxter Healthcare Corporation, the top two international leaders in the biotechnology field; General Dynamics Corporation and Rockwell Science Center, all leaders in international high technology; Jafra Cosmetics, an international cosmetics company; WellPoint Health Networks, Inc., one of the nation's largest publicly-traded managed care companies; General Motors Regional Office, and Verizon's Regional Office.
The rich diversity of businesses in our City provides the area with a strong and stable economic foundation. In addition, retail, corporate and industrial entities give community members a variety of local employment opportunities. Thousand Oaks is also home to many entrepreneurs and welcomes small business to the area. Sales tax represents the largest source of revenue to the City and the business community is, therefore, a very important component of the City's financial well being.
The Thousand Oaks primary shopping market has a current population of 320,000 and includes the cities of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Camarillo, Moorpark and Calabasas along with the adjacent unincorporated areas. The median household income of the Thousand Oaks market is more than $86,000 (2002 study by the University of California, Santa Barbara).
The retail buying market area is approaching $2.4 billion, evidenced by the continued strength of The Oaks Shopping Center, Janss Marketplace, the world's largest auto mall, and other shopping venues in the market area.
The Oaks Shopping Center includes three major anchor stores: Macy's, Robinsons-May and J.C. Penney, plus 150 high-quality shops, a food court and a movie theater. The Janss Marketplace, a smaller regional shopping center, also has three anchor stores: Mervyn's, Sears and Toys-R-Us, a food court and a 9-screen cineplex and is adding a number of regional and national stores to its mix. Additionally, national brand stores not represented in Southern California continue to seek locations in Thousand Oaks to showcase their new West Coast presence.
Numerous smaller shopping centers, such as The Promenade at Westlake and North Ranch, also offer shopping choices. Residents and visitors enjoy fine dining at many local restaurants while many hotels, such as the Westlake Hyatt, offer luxury accommodations. For more information contact the City's Economic Development Manager Gary Wartik at (805) 449-2135 or email him at gwartik@toaks.org.

Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks is home to Amgen Inc., the largest biotechnology company in the world and the county's largest private employer. The economy is strong and includes dot-coms and other technology firms. At the same time, people repeatedly look for ways to preserve the community's rural past.
The city is surrounded by a ring of open space, and local groups and the city continue to buy more land to save it from development. There are hiking trails in residential neighborhoods.
In some areas, people still keep horses in their back yards. And longtime residents remember Jungleland, where movie studios kept their large animal performers. Family-owned businesses and their simple storefronts have a strong presence along Thousand Oaks Boulevard.
But the specialty chains in The Promenade at Westlake and The Oaks shopping centers on either end of the main street are the greater draw. So the city and private landowners have plans to spruce up the area in the middle. Some of the smaller businesses fear they won't survive the retail Darwinism as the area improves and rents rise.

Agoura Hills
Good schools, low crime, lots of open space: Those are the virtues residents of Agoura Hills brag about when asked about their city near Los Angeles. It's close enough to Los Angeles without having to live in it. Yet it retains a rural spirit.
To that end, it has mountains to hike or bike through and 80 acres in six parks ranging from small neighborhood parks to an equestrian center. City recreational services provide something for everyone from toddlers to seniors. If it gets too hot, the beach is a 15-minute drive away.
Located in the Santa Monica Mountains foothills just 30 minutes from urban centers, the city sits among oak-covered canyons and rolling hillsides.
The community, which bills itself as "The Gateway to the Santa Monica National Recreation Area," sits along the Highway 101 corridor at the western edge of Los Angeles County, giving its more than 21,000 residents easy access to urban entertainment and cultural activities and nearby beaches and open spaces.

Simi Valley
Located at the edge of eastern Ventura County encircled by beautiful hills, Simi Valley is a haven away from the congestion of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles County.
"Everything is convenient. It's clean, safe and quiet," says 53-year-old Jerry Wolfe, who moved from Los Angeles to Simi Valley five years ago. "It's just pleasant. It's got a small-town feel. It's close to Los Angeles, but not too close."
Joyce Loftin, 63, moved from the San Fernando Valley 13 years ago for the same reasons. "I am always happy to come over that hill on the 118," she says. "We have lots of wonderful parks in the city -- parks and activities for every age."
Simi Valley is consistently rated one of the safest cities in the nation. It's the home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum and Corriganville Park, once known for being the backdrop of many western movies.

Westlake Village residents are often heard to say, "I can't think of any other place I'd rather live." Their community, which straddles the Ventura and Los Angeles county borders, is often thought of as an ideal spot to take a vacation.
Simply put, residents love their planned community, which lived up to its promise of beautiful homes, gardens and city services, surrounding Westlake Lake. The community retains a small city feel. Billboards are a no-no. Graffiti is non-existent. Utilities are underground.
The climate draws people here as much as the serenity. It's never too hot or too cold. Summers are warm and dry. Winters are kept moderately cool by coastal breezes. This all lends itself to outdoor activities, whether that be gardening in your back yard or hiking throughout Conejo Valley's open spaces.
The beach is a 20-minute drive away. Thousand Oaks' Civic Arts Plaza is just up the road as is the intellectual climate of California Lutheran University. The whole Conejo Valley beckons hikers and bicyclists.
A new city hall and library will go up in a year.
This exclusive community, centered around Westlake Lake, is graced by warm, dry summers, moderately cool winters and mild coastal breezes. The community of Westlake Village straddles the Ventura-Los Angeles county line, but all of the city of Westlake Village is in Los Angeles County.

Area Shopping Information |
|
Most Thousand Oaks
shoppers are more casual and undisturbed than our Westlake Village
neighbors, who are generally in a hurry and shop quantity rather than
quality. But remember that all the essentials are available just about
everywhere here in The Conejo Valley, where shopping is one of the most
important pastime events! If you live in The Conejo, then always remember to
just Shoppp til you Droppp !! For those who prefer to shop at one central location, welcome to the never changing Oaks Mall, which offers a variety of specialty shops, a complex movie theater, fast food court, restaurants, and a modicum of department stores, including Macy’s, Robinsons-May, and JCPenney's! The food merchants at the mall offer an overwhelming assortment of edibles for hungry visitors, including a variety of ice creams and hot dogs, hamburgers, and cheeseburgers, but for our finicky shoppers we have some excellent vegetable salads, too! And you can sit back down comfortably as you watch your children play on the fun-grounds right next to the sweet and delicious cookies that are available from Mrs. Field's! Your favorite McDonalds outlet is close by so you can grab a quick snack or enjoy other fast food items from at least a dozen other fast food vendors. The Oaks is a destination for the entire family. We're certain that Junior and Becky will find all they desire while spending their weekly allowance. To be sure, another popular shopping center is our newly-remodeled Janss Shopping Mall, featuring a Sears storefront, Mervyn’s, Linens & Things, Toys R Us, and a Marshall’s. You could also plop down in a 9-screen Cineplex all day and just watch movies while your kids are in school, and since there's a convenient parking lot close by, you'll see lots of other hungry shoppers dining on a great assortment of edibles like hot dogs, popcorn, and cheeseballs all within footsteps of your car doors! Other nearby restaurants and fast food shops will attract your short attention span too. By the way, did you know that over 61% of the United States population is now overweight? That doesn't mean that we Americans are fat and lazy. It just means that the majority of us are probably fat and a wee bit gullible. Why, it's no wonder! Take all those sugary soda pop varieties. They're so many to choose from. And what about all the donut shops easily accessible from your car? Diet or regular? How about some french fries to go with that? A burger and fries please! Make it a Double-Double! Need a new office chair, or perhaps a newer computer? Office supplies and other specialty stores, such as Office Depot and Best Buys, are located on Moorpark Road and in several other places around the area. Nearby are Barnes and Noble, Borders Book Store and Big 5. The Promenade in Westlake and The Fancy Northgate Plaza feature European-styled vegetable greens and "Mediterranean Cuisine". Try this topped with a delicious dessert. We're sure you'll enjoy shopping and eating at these fine local establishments! Also see the sculpture and water features as you enjoy a quick snack at one of the many food shops strolling back to your new automobile that you can buy or lease from The Worlds Largest Auto Center located right here in Thousand Oaks! |
|
Tired of shopping yet? We hope not! There
are many full-service restaurants to please every appetite from east to west
on Thousand Oaks Boulevard, and it's easy to find something to eat in
Thousand Oaks, where we have plenty of fine restaurants to choose from if
you're hungry again! Some people think that Thousand Oaks Boulevard will be
“the place to eat" as our community continues to grow. Our community also
features grocery stores such as Vons/Sav-on, Ralph's and Albertson's, Hughes
and remember that Gelson’s Market always has something really special to
eat! Many smaller neighborhood centers throughout the area are always available for convenient shopping. Among the newer offerings are Westlake Village Marketplace, including a Costco and Pet Smart which sell wholesale foods in bulk-sized packages! We hope you'll enjoy your stay of a Lifetime here in The Conejo! |

Calabasas
Folks in Calabasas like to think of their city as a mountain community, boasting a rustic, small-town feel with bold views of oak-covered hillsides and dramatic open skies. City fathers have kept a tight rein on growth since it incorporated in 1991.
Residents like Calabasas because it's close to Los Angeles but lacks the metro-area's frenzied pace. Others, particularly entertainment industry types, live there so they can telecommute from home.
The town's location also offers quick proximity to the coast beaches through Malibu and Topanga canyons.
Despite the rural overtones, Calabasas features a relatively new 200,000-square-foot shopping center with restaurants, retail and office space, a business park and a community center-health club. Eighteen publicly owned companies have offices in Calabasas, including Countrywide Credit Industries.
The city also has gone from 3 acres to 60 acres of city-owned park land. Juan De Anza Park offers 200 acres and serves as the gateway to the 6,000-acre Malibu Creek State Park.
Calabasas is a small, rapidly growing city that has served as the set for many films and television series, including ''M*A*S*H." It's known for its annual pumpkin festival, held by the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce each October.

Location: Northwest Los Angeles County, about 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Neighboring cities include Agoura Hills and Hidden Hills. The city's northern boundary borders the Ventura County line.

Moorpark
Moorpark is a small town with character.
For years, it was a rural community in which you could see cows in the hills when you drove down Spring Road. Now, it houses some of the county's largest employers and Moorpark College, which offers the world-famous Exotic Animal Training and Management program.
But it's still the kind of place where you know the people at the grocery store. Losing the small-town feel doesn't upset residents, who see the greater good as having more conveniences for themselves. Residents consider Moorpark to have nice, clean neighborhoods that are, most important, safe.
They say the weather is cooler than in the valleys, and a good place to get a view from is Monte Vista Nature Park. Also, with their own Regal Cinema nearby, residents can get a look at what's happening on the big screen.
